Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Energy Storage Engineer to join our fast-growing renewable energy and sustainability division.
You’ll play a key role in the design, modeling, and integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS), supporting grid decarbonisation, renewable integration, and the UK’s transition to net-zero.
This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge storage technologies, collaborating with leading developers, utilities, and technology providers to deliver large-scale and distributed energy projects.
Experience
Minimum 3–6 years of experience in energy storage systems, electrical engineering, or renewable integration projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize battery energy storage systems (BESS) for grid-connected and off-grid applications.
- Conduct technical feasibility studies, system modeling, and performance simulations.
- Lead on grid connection applications, including G99, G100, and DNO/TSO coordination.
- Prepare single-line diagrams (SLDs), technical specifications, and control strategies for energy storage systems.
- Evaluate and select battery chemistries, inverters, and BMS technologies based on project requirements.
- Perform technical due diligence, cost estimation, and system optimization for renewable and hybrid projects.
- Support integration of solar PV, wind, and EV charging infrastructure with energy storage.
- Collaborate with R&D and asset management teams to improve efficiency, reliability, and grid services (e.g., frequency response, peak shaving).
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards as well as UK grid codes.
Required Skills
- Strong technical knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and power conversion systems (PCS).
- Proficiency with simulation and modeling tools such as HOMER, MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Understanding of electrical design, protection systems, and grid interconnection.
- Experience managing end-to-end project lifecycles — from concept to commissioning.
- Excellent technical reporting and communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
Desired Skills
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Experience with lithium-ion, solid-state, or flow battery technologies.
- Familiarity with energy management systems (EMS) and SCADA integration.
- Knowledge of power markets, ancillary services, and energy trading.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it.
- Programming or data analysis experience (Python, VBA, or MATLAB) is advantageous.
Job Benefits
- Competitive salary and annual performance bonus
- Hybrid working with flexible hours
- Private healthcare and pension plan
- 25+ days annual leave + bank holidays
- Access to training in battery technologies, grid systems, and decarbonisation policy
- Opportunities to work on national-scale and international BESS projects
- Professional development and chartership support
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in a relevant engineering field.
